Weekend Recap: Fall Colors in Flagstaff

Over the weekend Erika and I wanted to feel the fall weather for a change, so we bundled up and headed to Flagstaff for a little camping and hiking. It was GLORIOUS!!!

Our goal was to stay at Lockett Meadow campground, just north of Flagstaff. There are only 18 sites available (first come first serve), and we didn't make it up in time on Friday. We ended up at a dispersed site nearby. It was a little dusty, but it worked for us!

The next morning we woke up super early to head up to the beautiful (and popular) Inner Basin Trail. This trail is known for the quaking aspen trees that change color this time of year... rightfully so because it was like walking into a painting.

To get to the trail you have to drive up a steep, single lane dirt road. I recommend 4 wheel drive for that part. (We saw 2 wheel drive cars, but it's definitely a bigger risk) That part was a little scary but totally worth it! It was absolutely stunning. Make sure you go early in the morning though, if the parking lot fills up they cut cars off and make them walk up the road, adding 6 miles to the trail! Unforunately, the road up to the trail head is closed for the season (the roads get icy and dangerous), but definitely keep it in mind for next year!

After, we stopped at a local brewery in Flagstaff to try craft beer... my favorite way to end a day of hiking.
