Tell Me Something Good - Goodwill offers veteran programs in Houston

Jeremy grew up in a troubled home resulting in what he calls “some bad habits.” He realized he wanted more from his life and joined the United States Army to give him the fresh start he needed. Things were looking up during his time in the service, he completed IT related job duties and discovered a love for information technology. However, after leaving the army, he eventually fell back in with his old friends and those same old habits returned.

A referral to Goodwill Houston came through the criminal justice system and Jeremy enrolled in Goodwill Houston’s Veterans Program. He learned many life skills including work readiness and financial awareness, just to name a few. In addition to transportation assistance and other supportive services, Goodwill was also able to help Jeremy start classes to earn his commercial driver’s license.

Jeremy worked steadily as a commercial truck driver but never forgot his love for the information technology field. He decided it was time to pursue his dream. In order to do so, he needed to add more recent IT training to his resume. Goodwill agreed to help. In October of 2021, he received a scholarship to enroll in the Google IT Support Certificate Program. Jeremy earned his IT Support Certificate and soon landed a full-time job as an IT Support Engineer.

Recently, Jeremy closed on his lifelong goal of home ownership. It’s the first time in his life that he has lived in a single-family home. This proud veteran and father of three boys continues to live a healthy lifestyle, embodying Goodwill Houston’s mission of changing lives through the power of work.
