Holiday Shopping Will Change in 2017!

As the holiday shopping season fast approaches a lot of people will be dreading the crowds they’ll have to deal with at stores, but according to a new report it may not be as bad as you expect. Why? Because most people will be doing their holiday shipping online this year.

A new survey by Accenture finds that 54% of consumers plan to do their shopping online this year, while 46% will still go to stores to fulfill their gift needs. And while retailers will try and get shoppers into their stores with deals on Black Friday, or even Thanksgiving Day, most people won’t be swayed. In fact, 52% of people are less likely to shop on Black Friday, while 50% probably won’t shop on Thanksgiving Day and 42% will skip Cyber Monday.

There are a variety of reasons why shoppers plan to skip those high-profile shopping days. They include:

  • Don’t want to compete with crowds looking for bargains (64%)
  • Can get equally good deals on other days (44%)
  • The day (presumably Thanksgiving) should be spent with family (32%)
  • It’s no longer the biggest shopping day of the year (22%)
  • The quality of goods aren’t as good as they used to be (21%)
  • And it seems a lot of people will be looking to give gifts that you can’t necessarily find in a store. The survey finds that 34% of people plan to give the gift of an “experience,” like say dinner at a restaurant or theater or concert tickets. And 36% of those people plan to spend more money on experiences this year than they did last year.
